About Gravity

What is Gravity?

Gravity is a local-first notebook for quick capture and graceful resurfacing. It stores everything on your device, searches instantly, and lets unvisited notes sink naturally out of view. There are no folders, no tags, and no accounts to create.

The idea came from Andrej Karpathy's append-and-review method: one long stream of notes where your attention does the organising. Gravity turns that idea into an app you can carry in your pocket.

Who makes it?

Gravity is built by Tristan Manchester, a solo developer based in the UK. You can find my work at tristanmanchester.com. It started as a personal tool for capturing stray thoughts without the overhead of folders and categories. When the workflow stuck, it became a product.

The philosophy

Most note-taking apps ask you to organise before you think. Gravity takes the opposite approach: capture first, let your natural attention surface what matters, and trust that the rest can fade. Notes you revisit stay visible; notes you don't, sink. No manual tidying required.

How Gravity is developed

I keep Gravity small on purpose. If a feature slows down capture, adds setup, or creates a new system you have to maintain, it probably does not belong here.

The bar is pretty simple: open the app, write, close it. Fast search, reliable storage, and a review flow you will actually use.

That is also why I say no to some popular requests. Folders, tags, and heavy onboarding can work in other tools, but they tend to turn note-taking into filing. I explain that tradeoff in more detail in Gravity's Missing Features Are the Product.

Who Gravity is for

Gravity is for solo capture: quick notes, light review, and a stream that does not turn into a maintenance project.

  • Best fit if you want low-friction capture and a simple daily scan to pull out what still matters.
  • Not a fit if you need a team workspace with permissions, assignments, and structured workflows.
  • Built for Apple users who prefer local-first storage, with optional iCloud sync.
